Introduction:
Wow, it's lovely to see all of you out here this morning and it's lovely to see the whole family of God. You know, I'm sure most of your houses must be looking different today. There would be many special differences as you prepared for the celebration of Christmas. Home is such a very special place at Christmas time, and looking around, I see many people who have come for the holidays from various parts of the world to be with family and loved ones. Isn't it a unique fact that in the time of the Christmas Season, home becomes something very precious and special.
One of the most well-loved movies during the Christmas season was about a child who was left home alone, and I'm sure a lot of you would have seen that Home Alone movie and the series. Some very popular songs talk about Christmas. Chris Rea wrote one of my favorite Christmas songs called Driving Home for Christmas, loved by many people, and the Eagles recorded a song called Please Come Home for Christmas, also loved by many.
Okay, may I ask you a question? Please help me on this. How many of you today have loved ones that are not with you, either because they are overseas, or they are out of Colombo, or maybe they are no longer with you because they have entered glory? Can I just see your hand? Okay, so many of you. Now, be honest with me. How many of you would be really blessed to see them today-or if they could be here with you today? Yes, we all know what a beautiful thing it is when families come together at Christmas time. Somebody said there is just no place like home!
For 9 years, I served in the city of Kandy and I remember this well. After our Christmas services, which were then held at the post office, I would rush back home, pick up a few belongings, rush down to the bus stand, take a bus, and often stand all the way to Colombo-roughly 3 to 4 hours.
