Title: The Glory of Christ and Glorifying Christ
Author: Brian Fletcher
Text: Luke 2:1-21
Introduction: Anticipation
getting into college, waiting to hear about a new job or promotion, wedding day, having a baby, retiring...
Christmas morning! But why? Especially for kids they know they are going to get presents but what will they get?
Christmas is the most anticipated holiday. And it has always been the most anticipated day since the Garden of Eden. God had put Adam and Eve in paradise, but they needed more and disobeyed God, sinning against his will and creating chaos in the world that man would never be able to fix. But God, being rich in mercy, told them that one day, from the offspring of the woman would come one who would crush the head of sin and redeem God's people back to himself.
So, from Genesis 3:15 and onward throughout the rest of the Old Testament, the people of Israel anticipated the arrival of this Redeemer. Through Abraham, Noah, Moses, David, and the Prophets, they all anticipated the day that God would send this Savior to bring final forgiveness and consolation to His people.
While we were not a part of this particular anticipation, we still anticipate Christmas morning. But why? Because we are anticipating the celebration of the birth of Jesus that happened 2,000 years ago. We know our need for a Savior and a Redeemer because we see the magnitude of our own sin and rebellion. And we know that Jesus Christ is this Savior, and that He is our only hope for joy and peace in this life and the next.
