STEADFAST LOVE

by Stephen Whitney

Scripture: Psalms 86:1-17

Title: Steadfast Love
Author: Stephen Whitney
Text: Psalm 86

Chuck Swindoll told a story about a good friend of his, Dr.Robert Lightner, who was a long-time member of the theology department at Dallas Seminary who was involved in a terrible plane crash. He was in a single-engine plane that flipped over during takeoff. He was badly injured and bruised beyond recognition. His wife, Pearl, said when she first saw him in the hospital, "I looked at this black mass of flesh, and I didn't even know who he was."

Thankfully, he did recover, and is a living testimony of the grace of God through the ordeal. On one occasion Chuck hear him say, "I learned things I didn't know I needed to learn."

Most of us naturally turn to prayer in order to solve a problem. Our prayers become the motivation force behind our prayers. When God sees that we have difficulties, he answers our prayer
by working on our behalf.

J.C. Ryle - "We live in a world where sorrow abounds. This has always been the state since sin came in. There cannot be sin without sorrow . . . And what is the best means of cheerfulness in such a world as this? I know no better means than the habit of taking everything to God in prayer."

Psalms are windows into our soul as they reflect the reality of our emotions and struggles. They encourage us to believe that God can handle our honesty as we express ourselves to him.

Title: A Prayer of David only occurs in one other - Psalm 17.

In psalm 86 David prays to God because he is in great distress.

His very life is in danger if God does not intervein on his behalf.

Spurgeon - "This psalm consists of praise as well as prayer, but it is all so directly addressed to God that it is properly called a prayer. A prayer is more pleasing to God when veins of praise run through it."
