Jesus Came to Fulfill the Law & the Prophets | Matt. 5:17-20 | Advent - 1
Today is of course the first week of ADVENT. - We are building each week in expectation of Christmas. We are reminded each week of the traditional advent themes of hope, peace, joy, and love ... all of these are ours in Christ Jesus. - Advent ... Christmas ... is about JESUS.
- Christmas reminds us ... HE CAME TO US. The Son of God ... came to earth, lived among us, did miracles, taught, died on a Roman cross, and was raised from the dead. - Why did He come?
ILLUS. - Have you ever been in a situation thinking ... "Why am I here?" "What am I doing?" - That can happen ... it didn't happen to Jesus. He knew WHY He came here.
- Ultimately He came on a rescue mission. - He came to save sinners. - But time and again Jesus in the gospels lets us know ... why He came ... and various things He came to do in the midst of the rescue mission. - The four Sundays we plan to look at some of those reason, we can't cover them all ... but we are going to look at four of them as we reflect this Advent.
Today ... I want us to kick off Advent with the reminder that Jesus told us ... He came to FULFILL the Law and Prophets.
- Matthew 5-7 contains the Sermon on the Mount. In Matt. 5:17-20 Jesus makes it clear ... he did not come to abolish the OT but to fulfill it. Then in the Sermon on the Mount he helps interpret and apply the law. Showing that rather than mere outward conformity we need heart transformation, and obedience from the heart.
Matt. 5:17-20 - 17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others ...
