ILLUS. - This time of year is the birthday stretch at our house. - All five of us have birthdays for 5 months in a row. One tradition I have with the kids is I take them out for breakfast on their birthday to IHOP. - We have specific things we do with them. A table Kristi decorates for their birthday that morning, a special day with just us, etc. Why? It's their birthday, and it's a day we can make them feel special, unique, and celebrated. We want them to know they are a big deal ... to us. Birthdays are great.
- But there is a birthday that falls almost in the middle of all of ours. It's a much bigger deal. The kids get more presents on that birthday than their own! Well ... that birthday is Jesus'.
- Listen, we try and do a good job of making our kids birthdays special. - But we don't gather with other people and other families and sing songs to our kids. We don't put a tree up, lights in the yard. There are no church services, and I never stand up and speak for 30 minutes on their birthday. - We all know it. Jesus' birthday is different ... because HE IS DIFFERENT. He's the SON OF GOD.
Listen, we love Christmas. We watch the Christmas movies. I took some time off this week and we WATCHED some Christmas movies. We go see the lights. We decorate and eat cookies. I like the "holiday" part of this. I like the traditions, the décor, the food, the music, the movies, the lights.
- However, you can celebrate Christmas ... and miss Christ altogether. We can celebrate Christmas and it have nothing to do with the Lord Jesus. You can celebrate Christmas and not even be a Christian.
So today ... let's talk about why Jesus came to us. Why was He born? Why did He come into the world? Why do we have Christmas? - That's been our series for this season.
- There are several times in the NT where Jesus said He came to ... call sinn ...
