Today, we're kicking off a brand-new Christmas series that I'm calling, "Do you hear what I hear?" When I was growing up, that song was always one of my favorites this time of year... but like many other Christmas songs, when I was a kid, I had no idea what I was singing about.

Come to find out-when this song was written in 1962, it was never intended to be about Christmas. It was written during the Cuban Missile Crisis by a man who had been in the German war and had fought against the Nazi's.

This song was written, as his plea for peace. That's why he wrote: "Pray for peace, people, everywhere." I don't know about you, but that song makes a whole lot more sense to me... when I understand the context and what he was truly saying.

I've never been good with lyrics-especially when it comes to Christmas songs. I grew up singing songs-you most likely didn't sing. I grew up singing...


We three kings from "Orientar." --I thought Orientar was where the kings were from. Anybody else?


Joy to the World, the Lord has come... and makes the nations PRUNES. I didn't even know what that meant, but you better believe I was singing it. I'm sure I sang it loud and proud... I can just imagine singing that in Christmas productions at my school, with confidence. The Lord came to make the nations PRUNES!


Silent Night, Holy Night-I grew up singing about, "Round John Virgin." I thought he was a character in the Christmas story, for years. In my mind, it was just a big round guy, named John Virgin, hanging out with Mother and Child.


Rudolph the Red-nosed reindeer-"Olive," the other reindeer. Did anyone else grow up thinking there was another reindeer named Olive?


I would say, for the majority of my childhood, I heard things in Christmas songs... that were never there.
