It's always good to be back here with you. This congregation has such a good spirit of mutual affection and care for one another. You are inspiring to me.
First up today is a brief observation about the psalm that starts with "The fool says in his heart 'there is no God.'" But I can tell you that this fool, me, has come to a different conclusion. I do not think that atheists exist. That's right. There are no people who say in their heart 'There is no god.' I think that there are fools who say, "I am god." And there are other fools who say, "There is a god, and its not me." The choice is yours.
I want to reflect today on our possibilities. When my first daughter was born, I was in the delivery room with the Labor & Delivery team, gowned up. The obstetrician allowed me to hold my child as she emerged into this world, and then I carried her to her first bath as we washed all the messiness of birth off her. What I will never forget was looking into her unfocused blue eyes staring at a brand new world. As I held her there in the bath water, I recalled the lines from William Blake's poem "Auguries of Innocence"
To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour
At that moment, I was looking back into her eyes, into infinite possibilities.
Sometimes, I look at congregations that way too. I look at a group and wonder what they will accomplish. I wonder what possibilities have come alive within them to make them do crazy things. Things like sheltering, providing medical care, child care, and basic legal services to immigrants coming across the b ...
