Title: Do we Believe that the Local Church is the Hope of the World? (5)
Series: Do We Or Don't We
Author: Jerry Watts
Text: Matt 16:16-19
"And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will have been loosed in heaven." And with these words the Church, His Church, this church was born. Over 20 years ago, I both heard and read a statement that affirmed my heart about the church. It said, "There is nothing like the local church when it's working right. Its beauty is indescribable, its power is breathtaking, and it potential is unlimited. It comforts the grieving, heals the broken, builds bridges to seekers, offers truth to the confused, provides resources to the needy, and opens its arms to the forgotten, the downtrodden, and the disillusioned. It breaks chains of addictions, frees the oppressed, and offers belonging to the marginalized of this world. No other organization on earth is like the church, nothing comes close." What I would add to this powerful statement is this: The Church does all this by offering what none other offers, it offers Jesus! We offer Jesus to THE WORLD. IT's our calling, our task, and our privilege. IF the world is going to know Jesus, we must do it and do it intentionally.
Today, we get to the end of our series on our Core Beliefs by asking one more time, "Do we or Don't we?" This is the 5th and last week that we ask questions about these 5 beliefs. The questions have been: "Do we or Don't actually believe that the BIBLE is our guidebook for life?" "Do we believe God loves us and that He has a plan for us?" "Do we believe that ALL PEOPLE (not just those like us) matter to God?" and last week "Do we attempt to honor God in ALL (everything) we do?" These are weighty questions which demand and answer.
