Title: God's Self-Expression (1)
Series: Origin Story
Text: John 1:1-18
Author: Jonathan McLeod
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:1, 14).
Series Introduction
Superhero movies usually begin with an origin story. We wonder, "How did this person get their superpower?" An origin story answers that question for us.
At the beginning of Spider-Man, Peter Parker is bitten by a genetically engineered "super-spider." The next day Peter discovers that he can shoot webs out of his wrists. That's Spider-Man's origin story.
Should we call Jesus a superhero? He is super. He does possess abilities beyond those of ordinary people. And he is a hero. He uses his power for good. I wouldn't call him a superhero. I would call him the superhero.
When Jesus was walking on this earth, people wondered how this man was able to do the things that he did. The Gospel writers tell us that people were "amazed." They "marveled." They were "astonished." The people of Nazareth asked, "Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers? Isn't this the carpenter's son?" After Jesus calmed the storm, the disciples asked, "Who is this man? Even the wind and waves obey him!"
The Gospel of John's prologue answers these questions. You could say that John 1:1-18 is the origin story of Jesus.
The Word
Not once in John's prologue do we find the name "Jesus." Instead, John calls Jesus "the Word." Why? Before I answer that question, let's look at what John says about the Word.
John begins the same way the Bible begins. He begins with the words "In the beginning." In verse 1, John says that three things were true about Jesus (the Word) in the beginning.
1. In the beginning Jesus was already existing.
2. In the beginning Jesus was with the Father.
3. In the beginning Jesus was God.
