- Psalms is a book of Poetry. The word psalm basically means "song." The Hebrew name for the book means "praises." So here in Psalms we have a compilation of poetry that is meant to be sung.

- Psalms is a book that captures human emotion unlike any other.

- It has been said that it is meant to not only reveal but to "shape our emotions."

ILLUS. - Music and poetry tend to do that. They make us think. They connect with how we feel. - Some of you are passionate about different types of music. You love the hymns or praise songs. - Some like various styles of secular music as well. - They are all poetry put to music ... and they capture ... thoughts and feelings. They can shape them too!

- This is a real book about real life. You may find yourself reading the Psalms and thinking "That's me! That's how I feel!" or "I wish I felt that way but I don't today!"-

- At least half the psalms are written by David, one by Moses, a couple by Solomon, and a few by the Sons of Korah. And then several of them are anonymous. But these authors were thinking and feeling things that they wrote about in the context of having a relationship with God. There are 150 psalms divided into 5 books.

- Psalm 1 is like a door into the Psalms. Psalm 1 is a WISDOM PSALM. - It teaches us, it point us ... into how to LIVE WISELY. - It's going to reveal two paths. The path of the godly/righteous, the path of the wicked. - They live different and the end result is different. How God views these people is different.
