ILLUS. - Weddings - Our culture loves a big wedding. People go to great extent don't they? Everything is planned. The dress, the tux ... the dress and tuxes of the wedding party, the venue, the colors. The photographer, the florist, the guest list, the officiant. - And of course ... we can't forget ... THE FOOD. - If you are not there to get married, and it's not your child getting married ... the food may be what you are most concerned about that day. - I'm not saying it should be ... I'm saying ... it may be.
- Favorite wedding food: the cake, cheese straws, the fancy punch
- Now in our day ... at some weddings you may get a big meal, and sometimes you may get more like appetizers and cake, it all dependents on time of day, etc. But we understand the idea behind a big wedding part, a feast even.
- We understand weddings are CELEBRATORY. - When a man and woman unite in holy matrimony ... there is a celebratory nature to it as a new family is being formed.
- It was at a WEDDING that Jesus did His first miracle ... it's referred to as a SIGN. - As we mentioned last week ... Jesus used MEALS to reveal things about Himself, to teach, to show grace, to do ministry. - When you eat with someone you can get to know them better ... and around these meals let's get to know Jesus better.
John 2:1-11 - On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." 4 And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come." 5 His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."
6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water." ...
