Unpackaged Christianity
It was about four years ago that we had a young man show up to one of our Monday morning services, which would usually go unnoticed, but not this guy and not on this morning. He was wearing purple and when I say wearing it, I mean his shirt, his pants, his shoes, his socks, and his hair had a tint of purple. The young man sat through the service and when I gave the invitation, guess who came to the altar to pray, yes, it was Rick.
I have been in this thing since 1979, so once my mind done a quick evaluation of the man and the moment, I quickly assessed that he would never return, as I shook his hand and invited him back. As that service ended, I really did assume that it would be a one and done, but I was wrong.
Rick came back the next week and the next week, and he will soon be helping us cook hamburgers and hotdogs for our church wide cookout. This young man grew up near our church, but then wrestled with addictions, before moving to Alabama, where he became a Christian, and was heavily involved with a recovery center for people just like himself.
In time, Rick came back to Dalton, found him a job, reunited with an old flame from middle school, and lives less than a mile from our church. Here is the kicker, Rick is Rick, he does not hide whom he is and he does not come packaged in our neat little glitzy and glittery boxed Christianity.
Every now and then when we talk, he lets out a word of profa ...
