Title: Armor to Put On (5)
Series: Ephesians 6
Author: Stephen Whitney
Text: Ephesians 6:16-17
On June 6, 1944 as the United States and Great Britain were about to begin the invasion of Normandy, France. General Eisenhower the Allied commander gave following order to the three million troops who were part of the largest seaborne invasion in history:
Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!
You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you . . .
Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened.
He will fight savagely . . . Our home fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war.
I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory.
The invasion began with overnight parachute and glider landings, massive air attacks and naval bombardments and then an early morning amphibious assault on the beaches of Normandy.
The battle continued for more than two months with different campaigns to establish and expand their footholds then to take control of the French countryside. By late August Paris was freed from German control. Nine months later the Germans were completely defeated and Europe was free again.
The Allied Forces defeated the German's because they were determined to win and were willing to accept nothing short
of a complete and total victory.
