Title: Our Continual Battle (3)
Series: Ephesians 6
Author: Stephen Whitney
Text: Ephesians 6:10-12
It was a picture perfect, postcard morning on Sunday December 7, 1941 on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Light northeast trade winds rippled the peaceful harbor. The U.S. sailors stationed there were just rising to start their day off from work.
This clam, peaceful setting seemed the least likely place for a war to start, but at five minutes till eight, the calm blanketing Pearl Harbor was smashed by the propellers of enemy warplanes.
It was a carefully planned strategy with 190 Japanese planes from 6 aircraft carriers swooping down from the clouds in coordinated waves to strafe and bomb the U.S. Pacific fleet of warships which were stationed there so our navy would not be able to fight the Japanese who could then control the Pacific Ocean.
Around the island 25 submarines waited to pick off survivors of the air attack, while several two-man subs infiltrated the harbor to finish off the crippled warships damaged by the warplanes. It was a brilliantly planned and carefully executed attack which caught the U.S. Pacific fleet completely off guard.
When the enemy strike force returned to their carriers about two hours later, they had sunk four U.S. battleships and badly damaged three more. They had also demolished two destroyers and put several others permanently out of commission. The lose of human life was just as terrible: 2,113 sailors and marines were dead and another 987 were wounded.
The attack caused President Roosevelt to call it ,"A day that will live infamy" because we would not forget what had happened.
One of the principles of war is that: the enemy will attack when we are not expecting them or prepared to fight.
There is a spiritual battle that goes on everyday whether we are aware of it or not. It is a battle between God and Satan which is seen in the conflict between good and evil, right and wrong, freedom and slaver ...
