The Thankless Task
There was a man seen standing at the post office counter one day when an older man shuffled up to him with a postcard in his hand. "Sir," the older man said, "would you please address this postcard for me?"
The first man gladly consented, and wrote what the older man dictated to him, and even signed the man's name to the postcard. When he finished, he extended the postcard and asked, "Is there anything else I can do for you?"
The old fellow looked at the card, thought for a moment, and then answered, "Yes. At the end, could you just put 'P.S. Please excuse the sloppy handwriting!"
How would you have felt if you were the person that had took the time to help that older man write his postcard? Would you have became upset? Would you have replied with a swift word of rebuttal? Noone likes to be used, overlooked, ignored, or feel as if they receive ingratitude from those that they have intentionally and willingly helped, right?
Many years ago, as the story is told, a devout king was disturbed by the ingratitude of his royal court. He prepared a large banquet for them. When the king and his royal guests were seated, by prearrangement, a beggar shuffled into the hall, sat down at the king's table, and gorged himself with food.
Without saying a word, he then left the room. The guests were furious and asked permission to seize the tramp and tear him limb from limb for his ingratitude.
The king replied, "That beggar has done only once to an earthly king what each of you does three times each day to God. You sit there at the table and eat until you are satisfied. Then you walk away without recognizing Go ...
