INTRODUCTION

I want you to take your Bible now this morning and find your place in two passages of scripture. The first passage is found in Philippians chapter 2, so just find, and hold your place there, and then turn back to Ecclesiastes chapter 4.

These two passages are going to be our foundational scriptures as we begin a new series of studies this morning as we approach the holiday season entitled, "Surviving the Holidays: Getting Together and Getting Along."

Let me tell you why I have felt led to preach this series of messages.

By my count we are 18 days away from Thanksgiving, 49 days away from Christmas, and 56 days away from New Years Day.

The Holidays are here. Now, normally -

- You'd think that this would be the most festive, happy, joyful time of the year.

- You'd think that this would be, as the song says, "the most wonderful time of the year."

- You'd think that this would be a time when most people would be happy and cheerful.

- That's the way all the ads and movies would make it seem - right?

- But for far too many people this isn't the most wonderful time of the year, it's the
most depressing and discouraging time of the year. Now, there are some reasons for that.

For a lot of folks, it's because of who's not there. (I don't have time or intend to deal with this specifically in this series of studies, but for those who have lost a loved one in the past year the holidays can be a sad and lonely time as you're reminded that the one you loved and spent so many Thanksgivings and Christmases and holidays with is noticeably absent.)

But, for many other folks, the holidays can be depressing, discouraging, and even divisive because of who is there.
