Big Idea:

Followers of Jesus were not empowered by culture yet they overpowered culture through living out their faith.

Intro:

Politics. It just means the way we make decisions as we live together. That doesn't sound so bad, right? By that definition, it's more than elections or what happens in D.C.-it's about how communities, families, and even churches decide how to live together.

It's easier when it's just you and maybe someone who thinks the same as you. As your circle of influence or amount of relationships grow, so does the difficulty of making decisions as you live together with them. To a degree...the more relationships, the more difficult it is to make decisions as we live together.

- Growing up as a kid, there may have been decisions that we resisted or gave into to
ensure peace in the home.

- Getting married, there may be decisions that we have to make in order to live together.

It's harder when we're seeing the issue from two different viewpoints.

- Growing a family, there may be decisions that you have to make for your family that as kids get older they don't like or your in-laws have a different take on where you spend holidays or how you may be raising your kids.

- Then in situations where you don't have the ultimate say on what's being decided, like work, local government, or church, there's a tension between decision making and living with those decisions.

If we then include national elections and platforms, it brings emotions, debates, and maybe avoidance:

- For some of us, we are trying to be apolitical-independent of both political parties.

We don't talk about it because we want to be liked.

- For others of us, we are one-policy or one-issue voters.

- For others of us, we are all-in on the party platform even if policies (in the platform)
contradict God's Word.

- For others of us, we vote for the other person because we don't like th ...
