INTRODUCTION

Alright, take your copy of God's Word and be finding your place at Luke chapter 2, if you will. This is the chapter that is traditionally considered to be the Christmas story, and so, this morning as we enter into the Christmas season, I want to begin a very simple series of Christmas sermons entitled, "The Gift of Christmas."

That's really what Paul said Christmas is - it's a gift. He said at the end of 2 Corinthians chapter 9, "Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!"

So, here over the next four weeks we're going to be looking at and learning about God's great Christmas gift.

We're going to see that Christmas is:

- A Gift Worth Waiting For

- A Gift Worth Giving

- A Gift Worth Receiving

- A Gift Worth Sharing

Illustration: I can remember when growing up in West Tennessee, and even before that, over in East Tennessee in the Knoxville area, I couldn't wait for Christmas. As a matter of fact, I don't know if your mind worked the way that mine did, but back in those days I kind of counted the year down by Christmas. I was either just coming out of Christmas or I was counting down until Christmas.

I can still remember how my mom would come to me somewhere around the first of June and she'd say something like this - "Brad, have you thought about what you might want for Christmas?" And I'm sitting there in my shorts and t-shirt thinking, "Christmas, why are you asking me about Christmas? It's June. I mean, I love Christmas and all, but we've still got over 190 days left until the jolly old elf and reindeer and eggnog and all of that stuff?" Of course, I didn't know it then, but why she was asking was she wanted to get what I wanted and put it on layaway down at Sears or K-Mart so that it would be paid for (There's a novel idea) by the time Christmas rolled around.
