Title: The Lord Will Provide
Author: Tim Melton
Text: Genesis 22
In Genesis 22 we find a story. God came to a man named Abraham. God had promised Abraham that Abraham would be father of a great nation. He and his wife, Sara, were old and well beyond childbearing years, but miraculously their son Isaac was finally born. Later, as Isaac grew older, God came to Abraham to test him. "Take your son, your only son, whom you love-Isaac-and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you."
Abraham then got up early the next morning and packed wood and his knife. He took along Isaac and his servants and they traveled to Moriah, the mountain that God had specified. Interestingly Isaac, the only son of Abraham and Sarai, was carrying wood on his back for his own sacrifice much like the only son, Jesus Christ would do years later.
They eventually went on without the servants. As the journey neared its end Isaac asked Abraham, "Where is the lamb?" By faith, Abraham then responded, "God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering." Abraham then placed Isaac on the altar, preparing to offer his own son as a sacrifice to God. God then intervened,
12 "Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son."
13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place "The Lord Will Provide."
"Abraham named that place "The Lord Will Provide." It was not the Lord Did Provide, but a future looking "The Lord Will Provide." It was only the beginning of God's provision for His people.
Through the years Yahweh God, the God of Israel provided for His people in the midst of a famine. He provided deliverance from slavery. He provided food and water in the wilderness. He prov ...
