When a House Becomes a Home

I remembering growing up in downtown Chatsworth, which was small town America, in the 1960's and it was wonderful. We lived on the corner of North 4th and Oak Street. The Johnson's lived to our north and they had two boys, with the Scoggins living in front of them, and they had twins, and the Cloer's and Spivey's living just to our south.

There was never a day that went by where we did not have something to do, some place to place, or someone over at our house. The Johnson's had an empty lot beside their house, so that is where we played baseball or football. In front of our house was "The Co-op" which had storage bins filled with hay, fertilizer, and lots of other fun things to play upon.

Beside the Co-op, there was the biggest patch of woods, where we could get lost in them and play all day, though as I got bigger, those woods were nothing, but a small patch of trees. If you went up the street or down the street, there were small streams, where we would catch crayfish, which was awesome to do.

Those days bring back precious memories to me, but one of the reasons for this was simple, it was all based around the warm atmosphere of home. Either we had other kids over at our home or we would be at some other kids home. In those days, you might get a whipping from a neighbor and then get a double dose when you got home, boy those were the days, right?

I had two bothers and one sister, though we were poor, none of us even knew it, because most all of the families around us were poor. There is nothing like have a family, but even more so, there was nothing like having other family members over, which ...
