Title: In God's Blacksmith Shop
Author: Robert Dawson
Text: Romans 5:1-11
We are now over a week removed from Hurricane Helene and things are still a mess and many lives still in flux. There is still a lot of work to be done. There are many in our area, many of you, who are still without power and water. Keep sharing and caring for each other. Family is important. I'm grateful for everything everyone has done, is doing and will continue to do.
Something many of us became familiar with after Helene graced us with her presence is the cold-shower hokey-pokey. How many of you know what that is? If you were blessed to keep water but not electricity or other means to fuel your hot-water tanks, the water was not at ideal temperatures to bath or shower unless you enjoy skinny-dipping in Ichetucknee springs.
Some of your shower times went like this. You turn the water on. Get in the shower and huddle near the back until you build up a little courage. Since most of us can't find the courage to go all in and stay in, this is what happened...
- You put your right arm in. Pull your right arm out. Shake all about.
- You put your left leg in. Pull your left leg out. Shake all about.
- You put your backside in. Pull you backside out. Shake all about.
- You put your whole self in. Pull your whole self out. Shake all about.
That's how suffering and tribulations touch our lives. Sometimes it hits a part of our lives. Other times it feels as if our whole self has been plunged into troubles, we can't shake then off or back away from them but face them and endure them.
When we are thrown into some affliction, whether it be persecution because of our faith or suffering in some other areas of life due to loss, health, or disappointment the fact remains that they all serve as a challenge to our faith. When they come, what should our response be? Why should we respond this way?
I want us to spend some time in Romans 5.1-11 today and try to answer thos ...
