INTRODUCTION

Take your Bibles this morning and turn with me to Matthew chapter 13. I want to begin a series of studies I'm entitling, "Amazing Stories: The Parables of Jesus and the Lessons They Teach."

Illustration: I remember that great theologian and philosopher, Jerry Clower, told a modern-day parable. It was the story of how they tried to teach Newgene Ledbetter not to lie. Jerry Clower said that "Newgene Ledbetter would climb a tree to get to tell you a lie when he could stand on the ground and tell you the truth. It got bad that the deacons in the church and the pastor decided something had to be done. Newgene was a pretty good old boy, but he just felt like he had to lie all the time.

The preacher said to the deacons, "Listen, let's go over to Newgene Ledbetter's house, and let's sit down and tell him the most bodacious, outlandish unbelievable, amazing lie that's ever been told in the history of the world and sit there with a straight face and tell it to Eugene for the truth. He'll see how ridiculous it is for good people to lie. And maybe it'll help him stop lying."

They said, alright, preacher, "Who's going to be the spokesman?" The preacher said, "I am."

They went over to Newgene Ledbetter's house, knocked on the door. Newgene said, "Glad to see you, come in and sit down."

Preacher said, "Newgene, would you believe that last Lord's Day, while I was preaching, and the Spirit of the Lord was moving, the back door of the church opened and down the aisle of the church was a big, old, huge, vicious brindle-colored grizzly bear, and chasing right behind him was a little ole bitty, black and white Feist dog? And that bear squatted right by the Lord's Supper table - right in front of the pulpit - and that little ole bitty, black and white Feist dog jumped on him, and ...
