INTRODUCTION: On November 30, 2022, NBA coach Joe Mazzulla of the Boston Celtics answered questions during a press conference following a victory against the Miami Heat. One reporter asked about the presence of Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton of Wales at the game. "Did you get a chance to meet with the royal family, and if not, what was it like having them there in the building?" Mazzulla answered, "Jesus, Mary and Joseph?" The reporter responded, "the prince and princess of Wales." Mazzulla then said, "I'm only familiar with one royal family. I don't know too much about that one. But hopefully they're Celtic fans."
?Today let's talk about the ONE royal family, specifically, King Jesus. On his HUMAN side, Jesus was descended from ROYALTY.
"This is what the prophet wrote: 'And you, O Bethlehem in the land of Judah, are not least among the ruling cities of Judah, for a ruler will come from you who will be the shepherd for my people Israel'"
(Matthew 2:5-6; Micah 5:2, II Samuel 5:2).
Matthew combined two prophecies in this quote. The latter part of the prophecy is from II Samuel 5:2 and refers to the Lord's promise to David, "You will be the shepherd of my people Israel. You will be Israel's leader."
The Jewish messianic expectation was that the Messiah would be a descendant of David. That's what is meant by the phrase: "Son of David."
Jesus asked the Pharisees, "What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?" They replied, "He is the son of David" (Matthew 22:41-42). The "Son of David" prophecies about the Messiah communicate "GLORY."
