INTRODUCTION: How much does it matter where you're born? It all depends. Under article two of the United States Constitution if you want to be president of the United States it matters where you're born!
But can you tell anything about a person based upon where he's from?
My son-in-law hails from Texas. He likes to say, "Don't ever ask a man where he's from, Steve. If he's from Texas, he'll tell you. If he's not, don't embarrass him."
I recently read the following: You may be from Florida if...
Your preferred parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.
And all the Santas wear SHORT pants at Christmas.
In my sermon today I want to suggest that when it comes to Jesus and the Biblical Christmas story the answer is "yes" it matters where you were born.
We're in a sermon series entitled "Arrival." Each Sunday we're looking at an Old Testament prophecy surrounding the birth of Jesus and its implications for our faith. Last week we considered the prophecy of the Virgin birth. Today I want to look at the prophecy from Micah 5:2 that predicted the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem.
Micah 5:2 "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times."
The city where JESUS was born has illustrates three characteristics of God: sovereignty, humility, and grace.
I. JESUS' BIRTH IN BETHLEHEM ILLUSTRATES GOD'S SOVEREIGNTY
