If you have your Bible, please turn to Luke chapter 9. Today we are going to continue our series, Divine Encounters. Today we are talking about "Jesus and Conditional Disciples."
I heard about a sixteen-year-old boy. He had just gotten his driver's license. He came to his dad, and he said, "Dad, I'd like for you to buy me a car. It doesn't have to be a brand-new car, but I'd like for you to get me a car." And his dad said, "Well, let me see, son." He said, "I'll make you this deal." He said, "If you will bring your grades up, your Cs to Bs, your Bs to As, if you will make sure your room is always clean, if you will make sure the yard is always mowed on a weekly basis, the yard looks good." He said, "If you'll have a quiet time every day and deepen your relationship with the Lord, and if you'll cut your hair, I will provide you a car." And so, weeks went by. The son came to the dad. Had his report card. He said, "Dad, the report cards are out." He said, "I want you to see I've done everything you told me to do. I've turned Cs to Bs, I've turned Bs to As, I've kept my room clean." He said, "I've mowed the yard every week, kept the yard looking good." And he said, "You know, I've been spending time with the Lord and every day having a quiet time. I've done all that you asked me to do, and it's time to have that car." His dad said, "What about your hair?" He said, "Well, dad, I was thinking about that. And I thought, you know, in all my time reading the Bible that Jesus had long hair." And he said, "You know, if long hair is good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for me." And his dad said, "Yeah, that's right, Jesus did have long hair, and He walked everywhere He went."
