I recall a song I listened to while growing up that went, "Serving the Lord, it will pay off after while." We were made to serve the Lord; the whole reason we are here is to serve the Lord. Rick Warren states "Bringing enjoyment to God, living for his pleasure, is the first purpose of your life. When you fully understand this truth, you will never again have a problem with feeling insignificant. It proves your worth. If you are that important to God, and he considers you valuable enough to keep with him for eternity, what greater significance could you have?" We are freewill beings with the ability to choose what we will and won't do. When the statement was made, "the devil made me do it" became a popular one-liner in our society; people used it as an escape which allowed them to do what they really wanted to do. There is a choice in the matter, and we have to make that choice. We must choose to serve the Lord or serve something or somebody else.

Our text is found in the Book of Joshua. This man Joshua was the one who succeeded Moses in leading the children of Israel into the promised land. It was this same Joshua that was one of the original 12 spies in Numbers 13 that brought back the good report concerning the land. Moses told 12 to go and search out the land and bring back the report; 10 came back and said that the land was great but that the inhabitants of the land were huge, and they looked like grasshoppers compared to them. Joshua and Caleb came back and said it was a land flowing with milk and honey and that they should go and possess the land just as God had directed them to. There are benefits to believing and trusting in God.
