Through the Pentateuch (1 of 5)
There's Power in His Name

Exodus 3:9-15
The question has been asked over the years, and again I ask the question which is, "What's in a name?" A name identifies a person and makes them an individual and different from other people. Most people who have the same first and last names usually have different middle names to distinguish them from other people with the same name. I will share with you that in Bible days, names carried a great deal of significance as the name spoke to who the person was, and how they conducted themselves as well. Proverbs 22:1 says, "A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold."
As we look at names, I'd like to identify a few people from the Bible whose names carried an incredibly significant meaning. We have:
- Abram, which means "father of height" and was changed by God to Abraham which means "father of a multitude" or "father of a great nation."
- Jacob, which means "he that supplanteth or followeth after;" some have said it means "rascal or scoundrel," but was changed by God to Israel and means "he striveth with God or ruling with God."
- Simon, means hearing; and,
- Peter means rock or stone.
In Old Testament days, when the children of Israel encountered certain things or arrived in certain places, they gave those places names to signify their importance, and we do the same things today. Sometimes, we give our children names of family members who were special to us.
So, with that being said, there is something about a name, and especially having a good name. Let me ask a few questions:
- How many people want to be known by the name "lazy?"
- How many people want to be known by the name "worthless?"
- How many people want to be known by the name "useless?"
- How many people want to be known by the name "prostitute?"
- How many people want to be known by the name "pimp?"
- How many people want to b ...
