Nearly thirty years ago as a young pastor, the Lord taught me a valuable, yet painful lesson. It involved flannel shirts. I love flannel shirts. And back then, I had quite the collection! My flannels were colorful, comfortable, cost-effective, and stylish. Kinda.

Well at the time, I was a spiritual father to a ten-year-old boy named Charlie. Charlie had lost his dad in a tragic accident, so he was being raised by a single mom. Every week Charlie and I would spend time together. I would play basketball with him, take him to DQ, and teach him about Jesus. Now, Charlie was a man-child. By that I mean he was gargantuan-a ten-year-old giant. By age eighteen, Charlie grew to be a 6'7" 300-pound offensive lineman for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. But even back in grammar school, shooting hoops and posting me up under the basket, Charlie was huge for his age. His mom struggled to keep up with his growth. He would outgrow his clothes faster than she could replace them. So, one day, I decided to go through my closet and give Charlie some of my clothes.

I sorted through my closet, choosing shirts I would pass down to Charlie-and those I would keep. As I did, I came to my flannel collection. Of course, the thought had never occurred to me that I would part with any of my prized possessions. My collection was vast! Many of them I considered "broken in" and "comfortable." Lori called them "worn out." But amidst my collection were some brand new, high-end flannels-a select few purchased at my favorite designer store: Ross Dress for Less. Because of these recent acquisitions, I began to flirt with the idea of parting with my "broken-in" wears. Carefully I placed my hand-me-downs in a bag and passed them on to Charlie's mom.
