Title: A Promising Partnership (14 of 23)
Series: Suffer with Purpose.
Author: Keith Krell
Text: 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1
This past week I did a little "recreational" research. By this I mean, outdoor recreation. Did you know that the United States has over 400 national park sites? These span over 84 million acres. And many of you will visit a national park this summer. But even if you know little about the park system, most of you are somewhat familiar with Arizona's Grand Canyon. It is dubbed "grand" for many reasons. It is 277 miles long, 18 miles wide, and over one mile straight down. This is flat-out astonishing! How many of you have seen the Grand Canyon in person? Well, you're not alone. Nearly five million people travel to the Grand Canyon annually to gaze at the wonder of it all. But for some unfortunate individuals, that's the last thing they ever see!
Despite clear warning signs everywhere, an average of two to three visitors fall over the edge of the Grand Canyon and die each year. It will not surprise you that men are 250% more likely to die from a fall than women. (I'll let you interpret the reasons for that statistic.) The most horrifying part is that all these deaths were completely avoidable! For, in fact, the Grand Canyon can be viewed just fine behind a fence or five feet back. Anything else is reckless. I mean, does anyone truly want his or her last words before aaaaaaaaah to be, "Hey, look how close I can get without fa . . . "
We laugh awkwardly at the absurdity and pointlessness of stumbling off the edge of the Grand Canyon. Yet, many of us approach sin in the same absurd and pointless way. We see just how close we can get without going too far. But then, it turns out we are too close-we cross the line and go over the edge, possibly resulting in the death of trust, a job, a ministry, or a relationship or marriage.
Just like visitors who ignored the warning signs at the Grand Canyon, we avoid God's warning signs and creep ...
