When I got in trouble as a kid, most of the time I would be sent to my room where I would sit and wait. I knew I was in trouble. I knew mom and dad were upset. What I didn't know as how they were going to punish me. Would it be extra chores? Would they place me on restriction? Or, would they walk in with the paddle?

In Hosea 4 we found out that Israel was in trouble. God had passed judgment. They were guilty. Now the prophet unfolds how God was going to deal with His rebellious children. One of the truths we unpack in this passage is...

Once judgment is passed it cannot be avoided (v.1-3)

God is not one of those parents who are all bark and no bite. He is not one of those fathers who are all talk and no action. He does not talk to hear Himself talk. He does not issue empty threat. He means what He says.

Hosea 5.1-3 - Hear this, you priests! Pay attention, house of Israel! Listen, you of the house of the king! For the judgment applies to you, because you have been a trap at Mizpah, and a net spread out on Tabor. 2 And the rebels have gone deep in depravity, but I will discipline all of them. 3 I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from Me; Because now, Ephraim, you have been unfaithful, Israel has defiled itself.

In Hosea 4 God singled out the priest and their failure to lead the people. They had foolishly abandoned the authority of God's Word. They failed to teach the people. Instead of leading them to the Lord and for the Lord the priest took advantage of them for personal gain, to further their own financial interests.
