Title: Remember
Author: Jerry Watts
Text: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Please turn in your Bible to 1 Corinthians 11 and look at the scripture we read together. Obviously, we are observing, partaking of, or simply sharing the Lord's Supper together today.
The scripture we have read is said to be a 'Confession" or "Responsive Reading" that the early church spoke together as early as a few months or a few years after the ascension of Jesus. This encapsulates the example and the belief upon which our faith is based.
Here is our complete passage on one page (screen). I want to lift up a word that our Lord Jesus used twice. It is the word "REMEMBRANCE." To make our preparation simple, I want us to think about the word, concept, or thought of as REMEMBER (MEMORY).
Remembering or Memory is an interesting thing. It is the recalling of past events that we have either learned or lived. It seems that when we are kids our memories are great and we remember EVERYTHING and when we get older, the memory begins to become suspect. However, I would offer this for thought. Sometimes we are accused of having 'selective memory" which is indeed one way which we choose to remember.
Also, there are some 'things' we have a hard time remembering while there are other things we have a hard time forgetting. If you think about your own life and memory, you can quickly identify these (and they'll probably bring a smile to your face).
Today, let's understand what Jesus is doing. We begin by being reminded that the context of what Paul is writing is the Upper Room on the night before Jesus is crucified. An honest reading of John 13-16 reveals that Jesus was attempting to get His disciples (and by extension us) prepared for the days ahead when He would no longer walk visibly among us.
He demonstrates the attitude His followers should have by washing the disciple's feet (even Judas'). He said, "You call me teacher and Lord. If I have done this - so should you do the same." ...
