A Prayer That God Answers
Jeff Schreve
Scripture Reference: 1 John 5:14-15
In 1 Kings 18:20-40, we find a story of four hundred and fifty Baal prophets who were praying to their false god. Verse 26, 28-29 tells us the following:
"Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. "Baal answer us!" they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made. So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears as was their custom until their blood flowed. Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention."
These Baal prophets took extreme measures, calling out to their god, but he never responded. I would think most of us have never used these methods so that God would hear our prayers, but have you ever found yourself in situations when it felt like God did not hear your prayers?
In 1 John 5, scripture teaches us very clearly what type of prayers God hears.
In 1 John 5:13, we see that John was writing to those who believe in the name of the Son of God. These words in verses 14-15 apply to those who are followers of Jesus Christ.
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us-whatever we ask-we know that we have what we asked of him.
Let us first focus on the first part of verse 14:
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us-whatever we ask-we know that we have what we asked of him.
This verse first teaches us that we can have confidence when approaching God. That is an amazing fact. That sinful, rebellious, estranged people like us can be forgiven and be welcomed into the presence of a holy God. In keeping with the writer of Psalm 8:4:
