When I followed sports, especially baseball, I had my favorite teams and favorite players. I enjoyed following their careers and watching them play. All the greats had one thing in common - they made the game look much easier than it actually is. Something else they had in common was that their careers all came to an end, not because the game changed but their skills declined. Their legs got tired. Their eyes didn't see as well. Their reactions slowed. The game sped up on them and they couldn't perform at high levels any longer.
One of the most heartbreaking things to watch in sports is a truly great ballplayer, a generational talent, who hangs on too long. Everyone with eyes notices the decline. Their stat lines confirm it, but they won't accept it.
Hosea is ministering to a nation in decline and near death. It is obvious to all who have eyes to see but they are not willing to accept it. In Hosea 4 he reveals some factors that led to the decline and death of Israel, the Northern Kingdom.

Hosea 4.1-7 - Listen to the word of the Lord, you sons of Israel, Because the Lord has a case against the inhabitants of the land, For there is no faithfulness, nor loyalty, Nor knowledge of God in the land. 2 There is oath-taking, denial, murder, stealing, and adultery. They employ violence, so that bloodshed follows bloodshed. 3 Therefore the land mourns, And everyone who lives in it languishes Along with the animals of the field and the birds of the sky, And even the fish of the sea disappear. 4 Yet let no one find fault, and let no one rebuke; For your people are like those who contend with a priest. 5 So you will stumble by day, And the prophet also will stumble with you by night; And I will destroy your mother. 6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
