Experienced travelers know the priority principle: Only pack essential items. Yet, it can sometimes be difficult to determine what is most necessary. Now, you've probably noticed this suitcase. (Display a large suitcase on the stage.) Let's call it the "Suitcase of Life." This suitcase represents our brief time on earth. We live in a state of travel because we are sojourners passing through this life.

In my life, I have a job, so I put a computer and a few books in the suitcase. I'm married, so to remind myself to cultivate and care for my marital relationship, I will put in some gardening gloves. I have three adult children with whom I devote time. So, I would put in a guitar, piano, and barbell to represent them and their activities. We like to go to the Oregon Coast, so I would add an umbrella and raincoat. I enjoy spending time with friends so I would add a pound of coffee and several McDonald's gift cards. I also have a few hobbies I love to pursue, so I would add more books and tennis rackets. Even though I work for the church, there are plenty of church activities I'm involved in, so I would add some food and more coffee. Then, of course, there is my walk with God which I cultivate every day. So, I would add my Bible, prayer cards, and yep, more books. And since life rarely goes as planned, I would throw in a boulder to represent the trials and crises that come my way.

I'm guessing that many of you can relate to my life. But do you see the problem? It is very difficult to fit all of our priorities into our suitcases. And, no, we can't just get a bigger suitcase. Sadly, we often allow the most important priorities to be crowded out. Even if you aren't a Christian, you deal with the same problem. But if you are a follower of Jesus, you must wrestle with God's priorities.
