Title: It's Time to Get Growing (1)
Series: Growing Up
Author: Jim Perdue
Text: ?1 Peter 2:1-3?
We've been studying the Gospel of Mark for most of the year, but for the next few weeks, we are going to step out of this series and focus on something that I believe is incredibly important for our church.
What is the business of the church? Some of you may not like that question. You may think, "The church is not a business, it is the Body of Christ." I understand what you're saying, but I want to be clear. Jesus gave the church a job to do. And that's the reason why the church exists today. It's our business. It's why we're here.
What is it? To make disciples of all nations for the glory of God. Here's how we define it: Helping people find and follow Jesus. That's what we're called to do. And if our task is to make disciples, it's important for us to ask the question, "What is a disciple?" We've answered that question with three words: Connect, Grow, and Serve.
You connect by building deep and lasting relationships and participating faithfully in worship. You grow by developing spiritual depth in your relationship with Jesus and others as you faithfully participate in Life Groups, D-Groups, and Bible Studies. Then, you serve by engaging in ministry within the church and in mission beyond the church.
This sermon series is going to focus on the second word in our disciple-making pathway: grow. That's why I've called this series, Growing Up! I'm going to ask you to do something very specific, measurable, and practical. I want you to get involved in a Life Group. We have selected Sunday, September 8th, as Grow Sunday here at Second. Here's the goal:I want every person in a Life Group on that day. Now, you'll hear more about this in the coming days and weeks but I want you to go ahead and circle that date on your calendar. Make your plans to be a part of a Life Group that day.
Today, we begin this series by looking at 1 Peter 2:1-3 with a sermon ...
