Introduction

1. Over a century ago on September 19th, 1910, at 2 o'clock in the morning, Clarence Hiller wrote up to the screams of his wife and daughter in their home at 1837 West 104th Street in Chicago. There had been robberies in their neighborhood and they had been told to stay on alert. Hiller raced out of his bedroom right into the robber at the head of the stairs. They fell down the staircase. His daughter, Clarice heard three shots followed by her mother screaming. Neighbors came running, but the man had fled leaving Hiller dying by his front door.

Hiller's murderer would lead to the first conviction using fingerprint evidence in a criminal trial in the United States, because we now know one thing for sure - without eyewitnesses, without movies, videos or even recording devises if your fingerprints are found somewhere it means you've been there.
