Operation Haylard was one of the most remarkable rescue missions in WWII. Late in the war American bombers embarked on a dangerous mission, Operation Tidal Wave, to cripple the Nazis oil refineries and disrupt their supply lines weakening Germany's military operational abilities.

Hundreds of crews flew through a hailstorm of anti-aircraft guns. Many American pilots were forced to bail from their severely damaged planes and land in enemy occupied Yugoslavia.These airmen, many of whom were injured, expected to be captured and die but a rescue plan was already in place.

Rescue teams, which included Serbian peasants, tracked the path of the flight crews as they parachuted to the ground. Risking their own lives these peasants located the American soldiers, housed them and nursed them back to health in their own homes.

These men had been saved from the enemy but the journey to freedom had just begun. While the soldiers were in friendly hands - they were still on enemy soil and needed to escape. They needed to return home.

Secret airstrips had been built but to get to the evacuation points the soldiers need to follow Serbian freedom fighters for weeks to reach them. This operation resulted in the rescue of over 500 American soldiers.

That story reminds us that to be rescued from something sets us on the path toward something else. Isn't the same true of us as Christians?

We have been rescued from hell itself, but that rescue put our lives on a different path, one that leads to heaven but until we reach that final destination, until we reach our evacuation point, whether that is death or Jesus coming again, we are to walk by faith through enemy territory following our guide, the Holy Spirit of God and the Word of God.

The One who saved us calls us to walk after Him. "Come follow Me."
