Introduction

1. I want to begin with a personal confession and hopefully some of you can relate to it. I believe in the power of prayer. I believe God hears prayer and I believe God answers prayer, but I don't always pray like I should or nearly as much as I should. I feel so inadequate when it comes to prayer and I wonder sometimes if I am praying the right way and if I am really getting through. Can anybody relate to that?

2. Just before World War II, a school fire broke out in the town of Itasca, Texas, and killed two hundred and sixty-three children. It was the only school in town and because of the war, Itasca went years without any school at all. When the war ended, the town began to grow and they built a new school. Because of the fire, they put in what was called "the finest sprinkler system in the world." They spared no expense. Honor students were selected to guide visitors to tour the new school and show them this unbelievable sprinkler system technology. They had made up their mind they would never again have to face this kind of tragedy. The town continued to grow and seven years later they needed to enlarge the school and in adding the new wing they discovered the sprinkler system had never been connected.

3. Do you ever feel like your prayers just don't connect? Do you even sometimes doubt that God is listening or hearing your prayers? Do you want to pray in such a way that you know you are praying correctly? You know that you are praying a prayer that God does hear and God will answer?

4. I do. That is why we are beginning a series we are calling, "Prison Prayers." A man by the name of Paul, who knew how to pray and how to pray in such a way that he knew his prayers connected with God gave us some model prayers while he was in a Roman prison. We are going to study three of those prayers and as we do it is going to amaze ...
