One of my favorite comic strips is Charles Schultz's "Peanut." In one scene you have Schroeder. He is the little music loving maestro who also happens to be the object of Lucy's affection.

As usual, Schroeder is hunched over his little Grand Piano and Lucy comes in and props herself up on the other side.

She is looking at Schroeder all goodly-eyed. Schroeder is oblivious. He is not paying Lucy any attention. Lucy interrupts him and asks, "Do you know what love is?" He stops playing. He sits up and says, "Love. It's a noun. To be found of. To have strong affection for." Immediately he looks back down and begins playing his piano again.

Lucy is speechless. She turns away with a dejected look on her face and says, "On paper, he's great." What Lucy means is, he might be able to define love. He may be able to describe love, but he doesn't really know what love is.

That could be said of Gomer, the prophet Hosea's wife. She may have been able to describe love or define love, but she didn't really know what love was.

We know that to be true because of her life. We know it because of her actions.

- Gomer's background was questionable. Hosea knew that. God told him to marry her anyway. She may have been morally inclined to sexual promiscuity or may have been involved with the sexual orgies associated with the fertility rites connected to the worship of the false god Baal.

- Did not take long for the pull of the old life to overwhelm her. She became unfaithful to Hosea. She pursued other lovers. She longed for their attention, affection and gifts.

- She broke her wedding vows and broke Hosea's heart. Not only that, but she also damaged her children and brought shame to the family.

Unfaithfulness in marriage unleashes pain on everyone it touches.
