Have you ever watched a sporting event that you were really passionate about? Maybe a Super Bowl, World Series, or the World Cup? Or maybe you were waiting for the results of a test, job interview or a visa? One of those situations that you got so excited about the results that it just was not right to celebrate by yourself. To fully enjoy it you needed to celebrate with someone else.
There are many life experiences that are best when experienced with others. Living one's faith works the same way. That is one of the benefits of being part of a family of believers.
There are fewer things sweeter than being in the presence of God while in the presence of others.
We see this in the early days of the church in Acts 2:42-47.
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.
45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
This whole paragraph in Acts 2 is a picture of how the early church experienced the presence of God together. They listened to the Apostles' teaching and fellowship and broke bread together and prayed. They met each other's needs, worshipped together, praising God with glad and sincere hearts, but it all started with the phrase "they devoted themselves. . ." This is where we begin as we continue our sermon series on prayer.
