Title: Shameless Audacity in Prayer (2)
Series: Prayer
Author: Tim Melton
Text: Luke 11:5-13
Today we continue our series on prayer. We will be looking at Jesus' words on prayer in Luke 11.
In Luke 11 we see Luke's telling of the Lord's prayer. It is a little shorter than Matthew's telling but the essentials are still here. Luke 11:1-4 says,
"One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples."
2 He said to them, "When you pray, say: "'Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.
3 Give us each day our daily bread. 4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.'"
It was common for a teacher or rabbi to teach their disciples to pray. John the Baptist had done the same. In these verses we see that the disciples who were familiar with Jesus' prayers asked that He would teach them.
Jesus then refers to God as Father in prayer. Father . . . All-Sufficient Provider of our needs. Author of our existence; Authority over our lives; Protector, the One whom finds joy in us and loves us unconditionally (Zechariah 3:17). This is our Father God who in Zephaniah 3:17 rejoices over us and even sings over us. He is our Father who has drawn us near, but He is not just any father. This heavenly Father is eternal, sovereign, Creator, Lord over all things.
Hallowed means holy, consecrated, sacred, unblemished, sanctified, pure and completely trustworthy. Hallowed is His name which in scripture means hallowed is His character.
He prays that the total lordship of the Kingdom of God would come. Jesus taught them to pray that God's provision would be sufficient whatever the day might bring. They were then to ask that God would forgive them in the same way that they had forgiven those who had sinned against them. And help them to avoid temptation.
