MESSAGE SUMMARY: For a team to have great teamwork it needs a strong sense of identity. For the church that identity is forged through an experience common to all believers - baptism.
INTRODUCTION: Team USA men's ice hockey received gold medals at the 2024 Youth Olympic Games in South Korea after shutting out Czechia 4-0. At the awards ceremony, the hockey players belted out the words to the USA national anthem as they stood together on the ice. What a beautiful illustration of their common sense of IDENTITY.

We've been talking about teamwork in the church from I Corinthians 12. We called the Church "Team Jesus" and we said if we're going to have great teamwork in the church it all starts with a great coach. We have that. God is our owner; the Holy Spirit is the equipment manager and Jesus is our coach.
But if we're going to have great teamwork in the church we also need to share a common sense of identity. Where does that come from?

We see this in the Bible where a common experience results in a forged identity. What transformed the 70 members of Jacob's family into the two-million strong nation of Israel? A common experience. Four hundred years of Egyptian slavery followed by God's miraculous deliverance through Moses. They saw the hand of the living God as he demolished and humiliated the so-called gods of Egypt through the ten plagues. They stood at the edge of the Red Sea and beheld the waters stand up on either side like walls and then walked across on dry ground. Then they turned and watched as God brought the water crashing down on the pursuing Egyptian army. They were led through the wilderness by the dual theophanies of a cloud during the day and pillar of fire at night.
