INTRODUCTION: What two presidents, both founding fathers of the country, died on the same day in 1826? Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. What DAY did they die? July 4th. Jefferson admired Adams and shared his passion for American independence, and the two Revolutionaries became good friends. Then partisan politics of the 1790's strained their relationship. Vice President Adams succeeded Washington as president in 1796, with Jefferson elected as vice president. Adams assumed that he, like Washington, would be re-elected to a second term. When, after a very bitter campaign in 1800, Jefferson defeated him for the presidency, Adams was humiliated, and the break between the former friends seemed irreparable. They couldn't forgive each other. PRIDE got in the way.

As we continue with our "HUMILITY" sermon series we're talking today about HUMBLE FORGIVENESS. Before we jump in, let's note four things that forgiveness is not.

1) Forgiving isn't folly. "Fooled me once shame on you. Fooled me twice shame on who? Me." (Gomer Pyle). Those who sin against us maybe "repeat offenders." Forgiving them doesn't mean we let them take advantage of us again. You can forgive and still establish "boundaries" to protect yourself. If your spouse cheats on you, forgive them. But restoration of the relationship will require boundaries, counseling & a process to rebuild trust.

2) Forgiving isn't "shielding." You can forgive the person who stole your car but that doesn't mean they won't go to jail for grand theft auto.
