Sermon Summary: This sermon develops the humility of Christ. 1) Release 2) Serve 3) Obey
Introduction: In June of 1999, President Bill Clinton declared every June to be "Pride Month." With all the attention, publicity, marketing and emphasis on "pride" this month, I thought it might be the perfect opportunity to offer a sermon series on humility.
I decided to survey the Bible for the words "pride" and "proud." These words occur a total of 106 times. They are used in a negative context 86 times(80%). "Pride" is used in a positive or neutral context 12 times. The neutral uses are all found in Job and refer to animals and creation, i.e., the lion, horse, leviathan and the waves of the ocean. The positive uses of the word "pride" refer to children taking pride in their godly parents, the Corinthian church taking pride in the Apostles and their ministry, and poor people taking pride in their humble circumstances.
Reading the 80% negative Bible verses on pride left an impression on me.
Leviticus 26:19 "I will break down your stubborn pride."
Psalm 10:4 "In his pride the wicked man does not seek God."
Proverbs 11:2 "When pride comes then comes disgrace."
Proverbs 16:18 "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall."
Obadiah 1:3 "The pride of your heart has deceived you."
Proverbs 16:5 "The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished."
I John 2:16 "The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life - come not from the father but from the world."
I also looked up every use of "humble" and "humility" in the Bible. Out of 94 occurrences, 63 were positive as when we ARE humble, or we humble ourselves.
"You save the humble, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them l ...
