Scripture: Ephesians 4:25-28

Title: Exchanging Habits (23)
Series: Ephesians
Author: Stephen Whitney
Text: Ephesians 4:25-28

Once while giving a sermon, Hudson Taylor missionary to China, filled glass of water and placed it on a table in front of him. As he was speaking, he pounded his fist hard enough to make the water splash out of the glass and onto the table.

He then explained, "You will come up against much trouble. But when you do, remember, only what's in you will spill out."

Matt. 23:28 Jesus condemned the Pharisees because,
"On the outside you appear to people as righteous but
on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness."

Trouble and suffering have a way of revealing our character.

We can appear to be one way when thing are going well, but when we face difficulties our real character is revealed.

Paul writes about the contrast between what a person is before they are saved and what they are to be like after they are saved.

With the Holy Spirit living in a person their attitudes and actions should change as they are controlled by God.

We will respond differently to trials and problems in our life because of the control of the Holy Spirit in our life. Like a glass full of water, what's inside of us will spill over on the outside.

Not only will our attitudes change, but our behavior as well.
Paul addresses three areas: honesty, anger and stealing. For
each of these areas Paul tells us what we are not to do, then
what we are to do followed by the motive for doing right.

As a believer our behavior is to change to become what God wants, but it also needs to change for the right reason as well.
Our attitude is just as important as our behavior.

Puritan Vavasor Powell - "A hypocrite knows more than he is willing to do; but a true saint desires to do what he knows."
