CHANGED LIVES (22)

by Stephen Whitney

Title: Changed Lives (22)
Series: Ephesians
Author: Stephen Whitney
Text: Ephesians 4:17-24

C.S. Lewis in his book The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe tells the story of Edmund who follows Lucy into the wardrobe and the land of Narnia. But Edmund doesn't meet a fan named Mr. Tumnus instead he comes face to face with the most feared being in all of Narnia: Jadis, the White Witch.

The White Witch is clever in her conversation with Edmund, asking him questions to find out why he is there. She is afraid because there is a prophecy that says her dominion over the land would end when two sons of Adam and two daughters of Eve sat on the four thrones at Cari Paravel.

The White Witch devises a plan to ensnare Edmund. She gives him enchanted candy called Turkish Delight. The more he eats, the more he wants. All he can think about is how he can get his hands on more. He is so consumed by his addiction that he is willing to do whatever it takes to get more - including betraying his brother Peter and sisters Lucy and Susan when they enter the land of Narnia together by telling the White Witch where they are.

Edmund returns to her castle without his siblings and instead of rewarding him with more enchanted candy, she gives him bread, water and the sting of a whip. His eyes are opened and he sees her for who she really is. He had known who she was all along, but had wanted the candy more than he wanted to know the truth.

That is the way Satan works. He lures us with promises and feeds our desires with things that never satisfy us, while he seeks to destroy us. We crave some things more than we crave God - things that never completely satisfy, but continually control us.

To satisfy our desires we must turn our back on God.

Calvin - "The heart of man is an idol factory." Anything or anyone can become an idol in our life in place of God.
