Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the U.S. in 1829, was nicknamed "Old Hickory" because he was known for his toughness both on the battlefield and on the frontier. He said,
"To the victors belong the spoils."
Throughout history the victor in battle has taken the spoils from those they have defeated as payment for winning the battle. In ancient times soldiers weren't paid in cash, but were allowed to take the plunder as reward from those they conquered.
Israel conquered Ai
Israelites carried off the livestock and plunder (Joshua 8:27).
David conquered Philistine towns
He took the sheep and cattle along with clothes I Samuel 27:9).
Babylonians conquered Jerusalem
They carried off the bronze pillars and all the bronze, silver and gold articles that were used in the temple (II Kings 25:13-15).
Nazis in World War II
When Germany invaded Czechoslovakia in 1939 the Gestapo seized Arthur Feldmann's collection of 750 drawings worth hundreds of thousands of dollars while he was put into a prison camp and sentenced to death.
As Germany conquered countries throughout Europe Hitler ordered a music action team to confiscate and catalog any instruments of importance and send them to Berlin.
The team followed German troops moving in on homes of those who had fled the Nazis or who were taken to concentration camps collecting rare musical instruments which were left behind. Violins including dozens of Stradivari and Amati now worth hundreds of thousands of dollars were taken.
The instruments were to be used in a proposed university in Hitler's home town of Linz, Austria, after the war. The lootings have been uncovered by American military documents.
