"Overcoming Obstacles" (8 of 10)
Series: Judges - Before There Were Kings
Pastor Jeff Schreve
Primary Scripture: Judges 10-11

In June of 1940, a little girl was born. She was a preemie. She was only 4 ½ pounds. She was the 20th child of her father, who had 22 kids in two marriages. They named her Wilma. She had difficulty pretty much all the time in her childhood growing up, difficulty with sickness and various other problems. She had pneumonia, she had scarlet fever, and she had polio. And the polio damaged her left leg, and she had to wear a brace on her leg for 12 years. And she would go with her mother every week to the Nashville hospital to get treatment on her leg. It was about a 50-mile bus trip. And she would go, and she would get that treatment, and then she would come home. And her siblings would work on her leg with these special exercises that she had to do to try and help her left leg. Well, at the age of 12 she finally got out of the brace. She started to play basketball, and her leg started to get stronger, and she was very, very good. And then she began to run track, and she was really good at running track; I mean, great at running track. So good, in fact, that she competed in the 1960 Olympics in Rome and won three gold medals, in the 100 meter, the 200 meter, and the 4x100 meter relay. Perhaps you're familiar with the name Wilma Rudolph. Wilma Rudolph overcame so many obstacles to produce such tremendous victory.

Well, we're in a series on the Book of Judges entitled, "Before There Were Kings." And today, we want to look at a judge who had to overcome much. His name was Jephthah. Jephthah had a lot of things working against him. But, as we're going to see today, he didn't let those things stop him. He overcame obstacles.
