In 1933, Adolf Hitler declared himself Chancellor in Germany and made Germany a one-party Nazi state. He had a desire for expansion. He had a hatred for the Jews and a desire to bring Germany to a place of greatness. He first took over Austria, and then he went into Northern Czechoslovakia. Well, Great Britain and France were very concerned because it appeared that war was looming on the horizon, and they met with Adolf Hitler, Neville Chamberlain, and the leader of France, in Munich on September 30, 1938. And they signed what was known as the Munich Pact. It was a pact of compromise and appeasement. Now, Neville Chamberlain, the Prime Minister of Great Britain, went home to his people, and he told them that they had achieved "Peace for our time."
Well, Winston Churchill was watching all that took place. You know, he was going to come on the scene right after Neville Chamberlain was no longer Prime Minister, and he said this about the proceedings, this Munich Pact. He said, "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war. And do not suppose that this is the end. This is only the beginning of the reckoning. This is only the first sip, the first foretaste of a bitter cup which will be offered to us year by year unless by a supreme recovery of moral health and martial vigor, we arise again and take our stand for freedom as in the olden time." It was one year later when Hitler invaded Poland and World War II began. Neville Chamberlain didn't see what Winston Churchill saw, and what he didn't see was this: You cannot compromise with evil. It's like a cancer in your body. You can't compromise with the cancer; you have to eradicate it, because if you don't, it will take over. And, as we know from history, because they didn't go up against Hitler at the time ...
