INTRODUCTION:
This psalm is one of the most loved in all of the bible. Often times we have found strong comfort and consolation in these word of David. Again this afternoon I want us to take solace from what the psalmist has to say. He speaks to us of the secrets of happiness.

This is not a outline that is original to me. It has been around for 100 years or more. Yet, I could not come with one that said what needs nearly as well as this one.

I) THE SECRET OF A HAPPY LIFE-vs. 1-3
The Lord - Yahweh - this is a beautiful name for God. Used first in at the burning bush when Moses asked God what he should tell the people of Israel his name was.

This speak of his eternality, and his power and his covenant relationship to the people of Israel. You see, this psalm was not for everyone when David wrote it. It was a personal Psalm. My shepherd. But it was also a Psalm of the people of Israel. He was their shepherd in a very special sense.

The Lord is the Lord Jesus Christ. John 10- I am the good shepherd.

The Lord is my Shepherd - The verb is a participle and means "is shepherding me." Eastern shepherds guarded their sheep, led them, provided food and water for them, took care of them when they were weary, bruised, cut or sick, rescued them when they strayed, knew their names, assisted in delivering the lambs, and in every way simply loved them.

A) HIS PROVISION IS GOOD- "I shall not want." Now, a sheep primarily needs food, water, and rest. Pastures were lush and green following the rainy season, but this was not true all year. The sheep had to be lead to green grass and across difficult terrain, and give protection from wild animals.

A sheep will that is hungry will not lie down and rest.
A sheep will not drink from fast running waters. The shepherd would sometimes damn up a spring so the sheep would be able to drink.
